Proposed Improvements

Intersection of US 1 & US 322

The process used to define the extent of highway improvements necessary to address the needs along US 322, Section 100 has guided the design team to propose that the project be reconstructed substantially within the existing right-of-way. A minimum of two through lanes are proposed in each direction over the entire project length to improve capacity.  The reconstruction project will separate the two directions of traffic with a concrete median barrier to control access across the highway.  A fifth center turn lane will be constructed between Chelsea Parkway and Cherry Tree Road to accommodate left turns into and out of the adjacent commercial properties while auxiliary right turn lanes will be provided at selected intersections to maintain the free flow of traffic through the corridor.  (Click here to see Typical Sections indicating the general method of widening US 322 through the corridor.)

The following intersection improvements are proposed for the project:

• Reconstruction of existing traffic signal at US 1.
   

• Elimination of through and left turn traffic movements on Spring Valley Road and left turn movements on US 322.
   

• Reconstruction of existing traffic signal at Fellowship Road/Station Road Connector and reconstruction of Fellowship Road intersection to provide four lanes on US 322.
   

• Elimination of left turns from and into Station Road (State Route 3025).
   

• Construction of a jughandle and a new traffic signal at the Cambridge Drive intersection for left turns/U-turns and reconstruction of the intersection to provide four lanes on US 322.
   

• Construction of a new traffic signal at the Mattson Road/Featherbed Lane intersection with elimination of left turn movements on US 322 and reconstruction of the intersection to provide four lanes on US 322.

• Closure of the existing intersection at Garnet Mine Road (State Route 3038, west of Foulk Road intersection).
   

• Reconstruction of Foulk Road (State Route 261) Interchange, including two new traffic signals.
   

• Elimination of left turns from and into Colonial Drive.
   

• Reconstruction of existing traffic signal at Creek Parkway and reconstruction of the intersection to provide four lanes on US 322.
   

• Elimination of left turns from and into Sommers Lane.
   

• Reconstruction of existing traffic signal at Chelsea Parkway and reconstruction of the intersection to provide four lanes on US 322.
   

• Relocation of Bethel Road (State Route 3016) intersection to improve US 322 westbound right turns.
   

• Reconfiguration and reconstruction of Cherry Tree Road/Bethel Road intersection, including construction of a new traffic signal, a Bethel Road connector, and left turn lanes at the intersection.
   

• Reconfiguration and reconstruction of Market Street (State Route 452) Interchange, including two new traffic signals.

Although the widening of US 322 from two lanes to four lanes will primarily entail widening to the south of the existing road to make use of the available right-of way, widening to the north or about the center will be done at some locations to minimize impacts to environmental and community resources.
